Our Latest Fixation:

The Fun Guy Lamp

I always think beyond the utilitarian use of lighting and consider it illuminating art. It’s an opportunity to add texture, shape and color to a room with unexpected forms and materials. I’m always on the lookout for lighting we haven’t seen before — new, old, or objects that can be converted to lighting — that will add something new to the conversation.

Verellen is a brand I love to represent because of their quality, but also their commitment to innovation and creativity, which extends beyond their upholstery to case goods and lighting. They introduce special pieces unlike what you see anywhere else, and the new Fun Guy lighting collection is a perfect example of that. I ordered these as soon as we saw them at market and we now have four in the shop, one in each color and size; I can safely say it’s my latest fixation.

Made of a crushed stone composite which gives it a unique texture and transparency, its light dispersion dances artfully around the space. Its base features a half-sphere-cut-out, playing with both positive and negative forms to create a cohesively modern silhouette. Though modern, its contribution to a space is soft and warm, and one I appreciate around the clock.

Solid brass hardware floating the domed shade and affixed LED light source are the finishing touches that solidify this well-executed design. I already placed the large version in an interiors project atop a custom demilune console: the curves of the Fun Guy mimic the organic lines of the console. The demilune was crafted from a single piece of walnut to organically flow from the wall - the contrast of a clean, organic form with a classic wood helped achieve its stark modernity. The variation of material and complement of shape created the perfectly unexpected pairing the space needed.

Its next placement? I just added the black version as an accent lamp on the acrylic console one of our vendors gifted to me as a wedding present that lives in my design office. Its versatility in adding a non-obtrusive element of modernity in both traditional and modern spaces is what makes it a new favorite. Come see the collection in the shop today.
