Open Windows

One of the first things I do in the morning is open the windows.

Before the coffee is made. Before the bed is straightened. Before the day properly begins.

Perhaps it is a habit I brought with me from Germany, where fresh air is treated almost as a necessity rather than a luxury. No matter the season, opening the windows is a way of resetting a room and inviting the outside in.

For a few moments, the house belongs to both worlds. The scent of rain after a storm. The sound of birds in the garden. The distant hum of a city beginning to wake up.

Fresh air has a way of changing a room. Not visually, but atmospherically. Spaces feel lighter, more alive, and somehow more connected to the day ahead.

It lasts only a few minutes, but it is a ritual I return to again and again. A simple reminder that sometimes the best way to refresh a home is simply to open it.
