Putting the Phone to Bed
Our days no longer begin at nine and end at five.
Work follows us home, into the kitchen, onto the sofa, and often all the way to bed. A conversation continues after dinner. One last email arrives. We convince ourselves that sending one more reply will somehow make tomorrow easier.
If we're honest, it rarely does.
A few months ago, I started a small ritual. About thirty minutes before bed, I turn off my phone and place it on the charger in my closet. The bedroom has become a phone-free space—a place reserved for rest rather than notifications.
At first, it felt unfamiliar. I wondered what I might miss.
The answer, of course, was very little.
Instead, I found something else waiting for me. The chance to be fully present. A conversation with my husband that wasn't interrupted by a vibration or notification. A few extra minutes with the dogs. Time to read another chapter, plan the next day, or simply enjoy the quiet before sleep.
Perhaps the phone needs a chance to rest as much as we do.
The world will still be there in the morning.
