Staying away from home can be both exciting and exhausting.

No matter how beautiful the hotel or welcoming the host, your familiar routines are suddenly interrupted. The rituals that quietly signal the end of the day are no longer there, and even the smallest comforts can feel surprisingly important.

When friends and family stay with us, there is one thing we always place beside the bed: a carafe of fresh water and a matching glass.

It is a simple gesture, but one I have come to appreciate over the years. There is something comforting about reaching for a glass of water in the middle of the night without having to navigate an unfamiliar house or search for the kitchen in the dark.

A water carafe asks very little, yet it quietly communicates care. It anticipates a need before it arises and turns a guest room into a place that feels considered and welcoming.

For a night or two, it becomes a small place of your own away from home. Sometimes the smallest details are the ones guests remember most.
