In The Little Ocean, Hayman places a quiet seascape inside one of his hand-built puzzle boxes, transforming a simple hinged enclosure into a moment of escape. When the small wooden doors unfold, they reveal a serene horizon—an image distilled to mood and atmosphere. The box becomes a stage, the photograph its glowing centerpiece, and the act of opening a meditative gesture in itself.

Craftsmanship

Each puzzle box is crafted in Hayman’s studio using traditional woodworking techniques and thoughtfully selected reclaimed woods. The interior photograph is printed, toned, and framed by hand using Hayman’s bespoke moulding, creating a seamless union of object and image. The piece carries the subtle irregularities of the handmade—patina, joinery marks, and the warm aging of the wood—all signatures of Hayman’s intimate, archival approach.
