Heinz Berggruen (1914–2007) was a German-American art dealer, collector, and influential champion of twentieth-century modernism. Born into a Jewish family in Berlin, he fled Nazi Germany for the United States, where he worked as an art critic for the San Francisco Chronicle and at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. After World War II, he returned to Europe and established a celebrated gallery in Paris specializing in modern graphic art. Guided by a discerning and deeply personal eye, Berggruen assembled an exceptional collection centered on Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee, with important works by Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti.
